Text Box: September, 2004 Issue Text Box: A Monthly Update from the DT Office of Academic Affairs Text Box: JCC DT Campus Text Box: Excellence”); Strengthen Professional Development Efforts: Create a Teaching and Learning Center; Fully Consolidate JCC & JTC; Improve Campus Facilities and Enviroment; Continued on Page 2 Text Box: PRESIDENT’S STAFF GOES ON RETREAT Text Box: Curriculum Corner: Update on Curriculum Initiatives (This Section summarizes some of the college’s efforts to create new curricula to meet industry needs and to partner with other entitities) Text Box: President Newberry’s Staff (Diane Calhoun-French, Joe Eames, Bob Silliman, Katy Varner, Mary Jones, Mary Etta Fisher, Mary Ann Hyland-Murr, Dru Milby, Jo Carol Dickson, Lisa Brosky, and Randy Davis) along with Susan Carlisle, Carrollton Campus Director, John Wieland, Shelby County Campus Director, and Larry Johnson, Luther Luckett and KCIW Campuses Director, participated in a one and a half day working retreat at General Butler State Park on June 16-17. The purpose of the retreat was to focus on developing new strategic priorities for the upcoming 04-05 academic year. The first day was spent assessing the results of internal surveys such as the recent Climate survey and student survey and external demographic and other data about the labor market and the JCC/JTC service area. The group also read and discussed a series of articles dealing with both state educational issues and Text Box: national educational issues impacting higher education and specifically community and technical colleges. The second day was devoted to a brainstorming session in order to develop a set of strategic priorities and action items for the coming year based on the previous day’s discussions. A follow-up meeting of the President’s Staff was held on Tuesday, June 29 to take all the ideas from the retreat and to shape them into a set of priorities and action items which were presented at the July 6 College Leadership Team meeting. Eight strategic priorities were developed and they are: Develop Initiatives for Student Success: Create a Comprehensive First Year Program Through Front Loading of Services; Increase Efforts to Improve Educational Attainment and Excellence (“Inclusive Text Box: create a Historic Preservation Craftsman School aimed at minority groups and disadvantaged businesses. Working with the KY Center of African American Heritage housed at the Trolley Barns they want to retrofit an existing space and turn it into a workshop and offer classes focusing on masonry, carpentry, business skills, and history. This project would also involve creating a curriculum with several possible Text Box: Biotechnology:The College is involved in a project working with several representatives from small Biotechnology firms in Louisville to provide Biotechnology lab workers. We are in the process of developing a curriculum for a post-baccalaureate Certificate in Biotech and eventually an AAS in Biotech. Using Perkins funding, we will be hiring someone to do curriculum development in Fall 2004 and we hope to have the Text Box: Certificate ready to be offered in Spring 2005. JCC/JTC Day at the Speed Art Museum: 3-6pm

Join us at the Speed Art Museum and enjoy the latest traveling exhibit: Tales from the Easel: American Narrative Paintings from Southeastern Museums, 1800-1950 and the permanent collection.  You can also learn about what the museum has to offer on an educational basis for use by you and your students.  Food and refreshments will be served by The Bristol catering.

The Fall Arts Festival:  Asian Autumn  10am-2pm

The Fall Arts Festival is set for Thursday, October 28 on the DT Campus from 10am-2pm.  This fall’s theme is Asian cultures.  Featured performers will be Chinese dancers, an Asian flutist, a Mongolian

Contortionist, and martial artists.  There will also be Gamelan music with Gregory Acker, poetry readings, Asian finger food, and a myriad of organizational and program booths.
